The Bearcat-of-the-Week honours went to second year Bearcat defenceman, Jack McGovern. At 18, he’s one of the young veterans the Bearcats count on for strength and leadership in the defensive zone. He’s doing those things and chipping in offensively as well. Last Friday he picked up agoal and an assist in the 4 – 3 loss to Yarmouth, then followed with a first period goal against the Crushers in the 3 – 0 victory.
He got his hockey start in the Dartmouth Whaler working his way through the ranks to the Major Bantam level where he experienced Atlantics Competition. Next up was a two year stint with the Dartmouth Major Midgets. The first season saw him help win Provincials, appear in Atlantics and gain exposure at the Telus Nationals in Saint John. At the end of that 2015 – 2016 season, he was drafted by the Truro Bearcats and Saint John Sea Dogs. His QMJHL rights were traded to Halifax where he experienced a solid camp before reporting to the Bearcats playing his rookie year last season. He was well mentored, now it’s part of his role. A MHL Rookie All-Star, he has plenty to offer at both ends of the rink.
