Perigo gets Rookie of the Month for December

The MHL is pleased to announce the Pro Design Cresting MHL Rookie of the Month for December is Truro Bearcats Forward Daniel Perigo. The 6' 183 lb, 17 year old left winger had 4 goals and 4 assists in 7 games played for Truro in the month of December. Daniel has turned into a good two way player for the Bearcats. During the month of December when Truro were missing some key players on the forward lines Daniel really stepped up his play, contributing both offensively (with his 8 points) and also helping out in a checking role. The Truro native is a PEI Rocket draft pick, attends CEC high school and last played for the Pictou Weeks Major Midgets. Congrads Daniel!

Back From Break

Cats ready to start second season in Bridgewater

TRURO - The Truro Bearcats went into the Christmas break on a high at the expense of the Bridgewater Lumberjacks.

Now they're looking to use the lowly South Shore club again, this time as a springboard to start their stretch run to the postseason. The two sides tangle tonight at 7 p.m. in Bridgewater in the first game for both clubs following the holiday break.

"We need to have a good month of January and that starts (tonight)," Bearcats coach Shawn Evans said. "It doesn't matter what place you're in after Christmas, it's a new beginning for everybody and that's the way we view it."

The Bearcats enter tonight's contest fifth in the Maritime Junior Hockey League's Bent Division at 16-13-0-2 for 34 points, two behind the Pictou County Weeks Crushers (15-10-5-1). The Lumberjacks hold sixth spot at 11-23-1-0. The Amherst Ramblers lead the division with 45 points at 20-5-3-2.

The Bearcats will be bolstered by the return of physical forward Stephen Walker, who has been nursing a knee injury.

"He's not a prototypical goal scorer, but he's a good, honest, reliable hockey player," Evans said. "We're going to be better having him back in the lineup."

The Bearcats struggled to find consistency throughout their pre-Christmas schedule and missed an opportunity to vault themselves up the standings, dropping four of their final five contests before Christmas against divisional opponents.

But with two weeks to sit back and reflect on what went right and wrong, Evans said he feels his players are ready to piece together a strong second half.

"Actions speak louder than words so I guess we're going to find out pretty quickly," he said. "But if we band together as a group and play and coach up to our potential, we can have a good back stretch of the season."

The keys to doing so will be to put out a more consistent effort, and improve the effectiveness of their powerplay.

"If we can do that we can have a good back end to the season," Evans said.

NOTES: Adam Fraser will be the only Bearcat to miss tonight's contest due to injury. The 18-year-old Dartmouth native is still recovering from a broken jaw he suffered Dec. 8 against the Amherst Ramblers. He was expected to miss six weeks.

There is one week to go before junior A teams across the country must set their final rosters for their respective playoff runs. The deadline is Jan. 10.

For the third year, the Truro Bearcats used their off-day, to man the Salvation Army Kettles at the Truro Walmart and Truro Mall. Working those two Tuesdays helped lighten the load of the Salvation Army in this most worthy community project.
