Bearcat-of-the-Week honours went to rookie defenceman, Dell Welton. He opened the scoring in the 4-3 win over Amherst last Friday, then closed the scoring with the winner late in the third, both powerplay goals. His skill set earns him responsibility and his response had made him a reliable young rearguard.
He got his hockey start in the Baddeck Bobcat “AA” Association in the Novice classification before moving to the Cape Breton West Eagles “AAA” Atom level where he first experienced provincial play. He spent two seasons with the AAA Eagles Peewees, again gaining exposure at provincials. At the Bantam level, he moved on to play with the Nova Scotia Major Bantams, playing out of Antigonish. He was the Rookie-of-the-Year the first season, then showed an offensive flair playing forward the second year, and experiencing provincial play in both. Next up was a pair of years with the Cape Breton West Islanders Midgets, returning to the blueline. Last year, he played 33 midget games and saw junior action with the Bearcats and Charlottetown Islanders, both of whom drafted him in 2018.
