Bearcat Banter – Evaluation becomes preparation

Life in Training Camp is good when the coach is happy.

Clearly there’s plenty of talent among the new faces. Competition for positions has been great. Campers are getting along well. That’s all good.

Unfortunately, things have to change. Numbers must be reduced The trimming process began last week following the annual 3-on-3 competition.

It was a grueling week, one players are glad to have behind them. The switch from evaluating prospects to preparing for the season was underway.

Last Saturday’s exhibition game against Valley gave many the opportunity to play for the “T” on their sweater.

It was an exciting end-to-end game with some structure surfacing on both sides. Some lessons are best learned early rather than later. For the Bearcats, there were several: team with most shots doesn’t necessarily win; momentum can change on the dime; must play full sixty minutes, and then some.

Following the game, players were given Sunday and Monday off. They deserved a break.

Some will do some self-evaluation. Some will be content with the week at camp and will report to midget teams and get ready for school.

Others will be determined to stick around through another week. If they move on, it will be the coach’s decision about reassignment.

That’s life in junior hockey. With the season starting late next week, it’s time to name the roster to start the season and be ready for that start.

Friday, the Bearcats host their perennial rivals from Pictou County,
7:00 pm at the RECC. Saturday, the Bearcats are in Pictou County for a 7:00 pm game.

The Bearcats entered the week with four goalies nine defencemen and sixteen forwards. That will change.

Fans are reminded that season passes can be purchased at the Bearcat Office. Besides exhibition and regular season games, seats will be held for post season play.

This year season ticket holders will be provided a thirty-day trial at the RECC (all inclusive) and have 24- hour advance ticket purchases for RECC events (concerts, sporting events etc.)

Remember: Friday at 7:00 pm.
