Many of you may have heard about “Maia the Mighty” and her courageous story after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2019. Anyone who followed her journey will know that she faced this horrific challenge with a level of strength, bravery and resilience that truly left all of us who knew her in absolute awe.

Maia had been a competitive gymnast who was determined, strong and full of grace. Her family, friends and amazing community of supporters watched Maia struggle with chemo treatments, master months of rehab after a painful leg reconstruction surgery, and when the cancer returned, her very brave decision to amputate her leg.

Maia faced these incredibly difficult challenges like a true hero. She taught us all to live in the moment and embrace life fully. Yet cancer is a vicious, unfair beast and it relapsed in Maia’s lungs, where it was no longer treatable and inoperable. Despite our broken hearts, Maia’s support system rallied around her and once again, Maia led the way, never once asking, “why me?” but teaching us yet again how to embrace what we can do, with a soul full of sunshine.  Maia died peacefully surrounded by her family and friends on June 17th, 2021. Although we all miss her beautiful smile, her quirky sense of humor, and her contagious giggle, she will forever live on in our hearts.

In her honor, Maia’s family and friends have created the “Maia the Mighty” Legacy Fund. Deserving of an award in Maia’s name, an annual scholarship will be given out to a CEC graduate who has faced adversity with strength, courage, perseverance and grace.
