Truro, N.S. – The Truro Jr. A Bearcats have named Richard MacKenzie as an Assistant Coach for the upcoming 2022-23 season. A multimedia reporter with the Truro News, MacKenzie has a long history of involvement with hockey in the Truro area.
After playing minor hockey in Truro, he was a member of the Junior B Bearcats in the former Northumberland Junior Hockey League and then the Mainland Hockey League. He spent two seasons with the Truro-Shubie Colonels from 1987 to 1989 before four and a half years with the Saint Mary’s Huskies.
His last competitive hockey season was in 1996-97 with the Truro TSN Bearcats, when he also became an assistant coach with the Junior B team in Brookfield. That led to a Head Coach position with Brookfield for the following three seasons. MacKenzie was also an assistant with the TSN Bearcats and was on the bench for the Allan Cup championship. His coaching journey also took him to Sudbury (NOJHL), Salmon Arm (Female AAA U-18), Cole Harbour (Major U-18), Truro (Major U-15), and a Head Coach/General Manager position with Antigonish (Junior B).
MacKenzie has coached at hockey schools across Canada, including owning and operating one in Brookfield/Truro with Bearcats Head Coach Shawn Evans and brother Sandy in the late 90s/early 2000s.
The Jr. A Bearcats organization welcomes MacKenzie’s wealth of experience to the team.
