Bearcat Banter – Getting Serious

All twelve Maritime Junior Hockey League training camp are in full swing.

The Bearcats kicked their pre-season activities off last Sunday with fitness testing, billet introductions and the first intra-squad game.

It was a full day when forty-four prospects stepped up with full intentions of being a Bearcat for the 2019 – 2020 season. It was a good step.

For sure there was a full range of emotions. There are only so many spots available for those in this mix, aged 16 – 20.

Coach Evans, now starting his 18th season, set the tone at the outset. Discipline, on and off the ice, and high expectations are the focus.

Coach announced that Ben Higgins would be the team Captain and G Blackmore, Assistant Captain. Their role is clear.

Returnees come back not fully satisfied with last year’s finish. They will be a solid foundation.

Last June’s draft picks were well represented. Some are still at Major Junior camps.

Off – season dealings resulted in the acquisition of additional experience. Each should provide further leadership as they seek to continue their careers in a new program.

Camp invites can clearly bring an element of surprise. This group earns solid looks.

As expected, it’s been a competitive week. Making the team is the goal, and making the coaches come up with tough decisions is a big part of that process.

The reduction to a more manageable is well underway. Upcoming exhibition play will speed that up.

This Saturday, 7:00 pm at the RECC, the Bearcats host the South Shore Lumberjacks. Admission price for Exhibition game is $5.00. Sunday afternoon, the Bearcats are off to Berwick for a 4:00 pm game against the Valley Wildcats

These meetings will be the first opportunity for many to play for the “T” on their chest. That should mean something.

Bearcat Season Ticket Holders are reminded that tickets are now available at the RECC, or online at ticketpro.ca and trurojrabearcats.ca. These cover all 28 home games.

See you Saturday at the RECC.
