Bearcat Banter: Focus On The Next One

To move up in the Standings you have to beat those above you.

Last week the Bearcats played three such teams.  Unfortunately, they came up short, losing two of the three.

Thursday (Dec. 12) the Bearcats played a strong road game in Summerside.  The Capitals won that one 4-3 but, in many respects, it could have gone the other way.

The second period did them in.  The Capitals scored three to tip the scales.  Turnovers against the top squad in the South Division once again proved costly.

Saturday (Dec. 14) the Bearcats and Pictou County Crushers squared off for the seventh time this season.  For both, this was a huge game.

The Crushers dominated the opening period, scoring two while controlling all aspects of the game.  Their edginess was obvious and effective, and the Bearcats appeared unable to cope with it.

It’s not clear what the intermission discussions were but whatever the message, it  worked.  Before the third minute of the second period, the Bearcats tied things up and treated their followers to an impressive come-from-behind win.

Sunday (Dec. 15), in Amherst, the Ramblers scored a goal each period with no scoring response from the Bearcats.

The Ramblers have been quietly holding second spot in the Division but obviously felt the pressure of those slightly below them.  The Bearcats and Ramblers are sitting with two wins apiece in head-to-head matchups.

It was a tough schedule for the Bearcats but if there was a game to win, it was the Pictou County matchup.  That’s a positive spin.

So, coming into this week, the Bearcats sit alone in third spot, three points behind Amherst, and one up on the Crushers.  Battles lie ahead.

Wednesday (Dec. 18) the Bearcats wrap up their pre-Christmas play hosting the cellar dwelling Valley Wildcats.  A quick look at the MHL schedule will indicate how big this game is heading into the Christmas Break.

The Bearcats wish all best wishes for a safe and happy Christmas Season.

Bearcat-of-the-Week honours went to Team Captain Zachary Marquis.  He scored two in Summerside, then added another two, along with an assist against Pictou County – that’s leadership.
