The win column suggests September was unkind to the Truro Bearcats.
In all five outings in the month, the team came out on the short end of the verdict in each. That was not the outcome anticipated coming out of training camp.
A shortage of returnees familiar with the Bearcat way, and the MHL, was a problem. Injury didn’t help, in fact, it was the team’s third game before the roster had a full compliment of two goalies and eighteen skaters.
No matter the competition, they could count, and there would be no sympathy shown for your situation.
This past weekend the team suffered a pair of losses by a one goal margin. In Berwick, the hometown Wildcats scored four goals in the first period while the Bearcats replied once.
Over the next two periods, the Bearcats fought back, getting a brace in the second but were unable to get the equalizer, losing 4-3.
Saturday, in Amherst, the Bearcats were down two before again hitting back with a pair to make things close, losing 3-2 to the Ramblers.
It’s best not to ignore the fact that the first period in each game did them in. In both games the Bearcats outscored the opposition over the last two periods.
A quick look at September’s outcomes show the Bearcats were outscored 10-3 in first period play. Different starts could translate into different results.
The Bearcats look to turn things around in October. They have six home games and three on the road, and the attitude coming out of the Bearcat dressing room remains positive.
This Saturday the Bearcats host the Summerside Western Capitals. The Capitals enter this week undefeated in five games to lead the South Division. Game time 7:00 pm.
Sunday, at 4:00 pm, Edmundston comes to the RECC. The Blizzard are also undefeated in five to lead the North.
Bearcat-of-the-Week honours go to first year Bearcat, Matthew Bolduc. He scored a pair of goals in each weekend game to keep the team in the striking zone. The third-year junior spent the 2022-2023 season with the Valleyfield Braves (QJHL) and last year with his hometown Val-d’Or Foreurs (QMJHL). Previously the big Center played U-18 hockey with the Amos Forestiers. He and linemates, Zach Marquis and Liam Welsh are a go-to unit for the Bearcats.
