Bearcat Banter: Move To Third Spot

The Truro Bearcats played two Divisional matchups last week, coming away with a split.

Last Wednesday (February 5) the Bearcats had their seventh meeting of the season with Amherst.  The Ramblers picked up the 4-2 road win, their fourth to date.

By all accounts it was a good game from start to finish, featuring end-to-end action, good goaltending and a splash of physicality.

The Ramblers have size and skill and make you work for space.  The Bearcats played them straight up but were unable to capitalize on the powerplay opportunities that came their way.

The win solidified the Ramblers hold on second spot in the Eastlink South Division, third overall in the MHL, behind Edmundston and Summerside.  The Bearcats and Ramblers have a final meeting in Truro, on Wednesday, February 19.  Mark it on your calendar.

Saturday (February 8), the Bearcats exploded for a 10-3 win over the Mariners in Yarmouth, scoring four in the first period and three in each of the two remaining periods.

The Mariners opened the scoring before the first minute of the game was finished.  Obviously, it sparked the Bearcats who responded with seven straight goals en route to the lopsided win.

The Bearcats have won five of the six meetings to date and will be back in Yarmouth again next Saturday (February 15).  There is also a makeup game with the Mariners, in Truro to be scheduled.

The Bearcats are off to Fredericton on Family Day (February 17) for a 2:00 pm game with the Red Wings.  Truro won in their first meeting at the RECC in January.

Before those games are played, the MHL will conduct the First Annual Metal Fab All-Star event on February 11, in Edmundston.  It will be North vs South in two 25-minute games.

The Young Guns (players aged 16-18) include Bearcats Isaac Arsenault and Tristan St.-Gelais, along with Coach Jon Greenwood.  The Senior Stars (players aged 19-20) include Zach Marquis, Philippe Fauchon and Jack Milner.

What a great way to display the MHL talent pool.

Bearcat-of-the-Week honours go to Jake Todd.  Centering a line between Zachary Marquis and Eli Baillargeon proved to be rewarding.  Todd, the game’s First Star in Yarmouth, picked up two goals, including the winner, and added four assists.  The line produced sixteen

points in the game.  Todd, a 2022 Bearcat draft pick, came to the Bearcats in January, eleven games into his third Moosehead season.
