Bearcat Banter: Great Start

The opening weekend of the 2026-2027 MHL season was a rewarding one for the Truro Bearcats.

The Home Opener against the West Kent Steamers last Friday was special even before the opening face-off.  The introduction of this year’s Bearcat roster, the unveiling of the Championship banners and the tribute to the 2026 MHL Champion Bearcats added to the festivities.

The visiting Steamers took a two-goal lead by the mid-point of the first period but the Bearcats found their legs, scoring three to take the lead and never looked back enroute to the 8-5 win.

In Saturday’s game against Summerside, the Capitals took an early lead but the Bearcats, once again stormed back, scoring in all three periods leading to the 6-3 win.

There are high expectations for the returning Bearcats.  They didn’t disappoint.  Seeing role players step up, assuming new responsibility, and delivering was gratifying.

In the days leading up to the opening, the Bearcats were busy adding players.  Zach Gill (18, Moncton) played the last 2 years with Salisbury School in Connecticut.  He played both games paired on defence with veteran Eric Halliday.

Caylen Blake (18, Corner Brook) spent the last two seasons with the Halifax Mooseheads.  He, too, played both games, picking up four assists in the two outings as a member of the team’s go-to unit.  Team Captain Antoine Fontaine scored two and added two helpers.  Callum Aucoin added three goals and two assists.  For sure the trio was clicking.

The Bearcats hit the road this week, playing the Crushers in Pictou County Thursday.  The Crushers lost a close one in Amherst but look to correct that in their Home Opener against the Bearcats.

Friday, the Bearcats travel to Yarmouth to face the Mariners, who have a win and loss in two outings coming into this week.

Truro’s next home game is set for Sunday, September 27 when the Crushers come to the RECC.  Note this game has a 4:00 pm start time.
