Bearcat Banter: Every Game Matters

The Truro Bearcats opened February with a weekend split against Divisional opponents.

Saturday, in Summerside, Truro came out on the short end of a 7-4 verdict.  This was the sixth meeting between the Bearcats and Capitals, each ending in Summerside’s favour.

The Bearcats had a problem finishing.  After two periods the Capitals tallied three times with no Bearcat response.

The final period was wide open, each club scoring four.  With two meetings remaining between the two, the Bearcats must find a way to place some doubt in the mind of this opponent which could possibly be a First Round matchup.

Sunday, the Bearcats scored early and often en

route to a 6-0 shutout win over the Yarmouth Mariners.  This was Truro’s fourth win in five outings with the Mariners.

The Bearcats didn’t give Yarmouth much room, holding the visitors to 16 shots over the course of the game while directing 35 their way.

The Bearcats enter the week in fourth place, one point behind Pictou County and fourteen up on Yarmouth.

Truro has seven games remaining in February’s schedule, with two Divisional games slated for this week.

First up is the Wednesday (February 5) game at home when they meet the Amherst Ramblers, who enter the week in second spot in the South with 54 points.

The Bearcats and Ramblers each have three wins in head-to-head matchups.  They meet again in Truro on February 19.  Both teams want to display their “A” game.

Saturday (February 8), the Bearcats are off to Yarmouth.  In fact, the Bearcats will be in Yarmouth the following Saturday, as well – more games with implications.

Truro’s Special team stats are worthy of note.  The Bearcats have the fewest penalty minutes in the MHL with 553.  Staying out of the Box is a strength, along with the MHL’s Top Penalty Kill operating a 85.2%.

The Power Play is a different story, and a work in Progress.  At 16.4% proficiency, they are second lowest in the MHL.
