The Truro Bearcats faced stiff competition over the weekend, managing to come away with a split.
Friday, the Miramichi Timberwolves played like a team looking to extend a winning streak. They succeeded, but not without push-back.
The Timberwolves put three on the board before the game was six minutes old. A quick transition game complimented by a suffocating forecheck put the Bearcats in a hole.
Credit the Bearcats for hitting back and basically controlling the second period to make it a one goal game before the visitors unloaded with a pair for a 5-2 win.
Sunday, the visit to Amherst proved profitable. Falling behind by two did not deter a determined Bearcat team from roaring all the way back for a 4-2 road win.
Falling behind early in both games clearly was not desirable, but the team work ethic was never in question, even though down a few bodies.
This week the team gears up for three huge Divisional games, the first two on the road.
Thursday, Truro is off to New Glasgow for its sixth game against the Crushers. The Bearcats have a 3-2 edge in games played to date.
Friday, the Bearcats are in Berwick to face the Wildcats. This is their fifth meeting, each with two wins to their credit.
Sunday, the Bearcats are home to face the Yarmouth Mariners. The Bearcats have wins in two of the three previous meetings. Game time is 4:00 pm.
This group of four has been reshuffled in the Standings weekly. Finding separation in this pack is clearly a chore.
Coming into this week the Eastlink Standings are as follows: Summerside (40 pts) remains in top spot, second overall in the MHL; Amherst sits with 22 pts, Yarmouth (21), followed by Truro and Pictou County each with 19; and Valley occupies the final spot with 16.
It’s great to see the Boston Pizza Seventh Player Program underway. It adds an exciting element to the home games for all concerned.
Final notice = the Kinsmen Teddy Bear Toss is set for this Sunday. Let’s get behind this community endeavour.
Bearcat-of-the-Week honours went to Julien Roy, who scored one and assisted on another in the road win. He played his U-18 hockey in Riviere-du-Loup and Magog before making his way to Truro last year. The 2022 Quebec Rempart draft choice plays an honest two-way game.
