Bearcat Banter: Restart Your Engines

The boys are back in town.

While all enjoyed time at home with family and friends, they were equally excited to get back to Truro and pick up from where they left off.

The Bearcats put together a 16-1 record over November and December to enter the Christmas Break first overall in the MHL and earning the #11 spot in the CJHL Rankings.

The MHL picks up play on four fronts this Friday (January 2).  Included is the Bearcat trip to Yarmouth to face the Mariners.

Sunday, the Mariners are in Truro.  In the four head-to-head meetings the Bearcats have come out the victors.  Both games have 7:00 pm starts.

Hardcore MHL fans often refer to the time from the break to the playoffs as the next season.  It’s all about positioning for what comes after.

The Bearcats are clearly in a good spot but realize all spots in the Eastlink Division remain wide open.  There can be no let up.

The Bearcats are solid in all zones.  The goaltending tandem is young but strong.  Louca Connolly’s 14-2-2 record and 2.55 GAA are tops in the League.  Sam Berthiaume, in his seven starts, has posted a 6-1 record and 2.57 GAA.

Defensively, the Bearcats are without a 20-year-old in the zone.  The corps, however, is loaded with skill, experience, size and mobility.  Combined, this is a formidable group.

Offensively, Truro has a solid mix of skill, age and overall tenacity.  Eli Baillargeon is third in MHL scoring with 42 points, including a league high 26 goals. Jake Todd is close behind with 41 points while newcomers Callum Aucoin (20+13) and Nate Curson (11-16) are contributing big time.  Team Captain, Liam Welsh, with 8 goals and 20 assists, continues to be the engine driving the offence.

The December Trade Freeze is coming to a close and the Trade Deadline for the MHL is set for January 10.  Teams are navel grazing to determine whether they buy, sell, or stand pat.

The Bearcat plan since coming into the MHL has been to make the playoffs, then see what happens.  As always, they look to get better.

Last year, coming out of the Trade Deadline, the Bearcats for a host of reasons, brought seven new players on board.

As stated earlier, the Bearcats are in a great spot.
