The Truro Bearcats got a couple of make-up games out of the way before heading off to the last week of the regular season schedule.
Last Tuesday (February 25), the Yarmouth Mariners came to town with playoff aspirations on their mind. They played hungry and got rewarded.
The game was tied at one apiece heading into the final period; however, the Mariners scored three unanswered for the 4-1 win.
It’s been said a goalie can steal a game. The Bearcats fired 44 the Mariner way, including 17 in the third. Their goalie slammed the door shut.
The Bearcats won five of the eight meetings over the course of the season. For the Mariners their hopes ended two nights later when the opportunity for post-season play evaporated.
Sunday (March 2) found the Bearcats in Fredericton. They came away with a 5-3 win, the second in two meetings with the Red Wings.
The teams played even in the opening period, but the Bearcats blew it open with three unanswered in the second. The Red Wings closed the gap late but a Bearcat empty-netter sealed the victory.
The Bearcats have two games remaining. Thursday (March 6) the team is off to Summerside. To date the Bearcats have one victory in seven meetings.
That win, back in February, was an impressive 6-3 home win. The plan is to win a second; however, the Capitals may have other thoughts.
Next Saturday (March 8) the Bearcats finish up with a visit from the Valley Wildcats. Truro holds five wins in the previous seven head-to-head matchups.
The Wildcats underwent a massive lineup adjustment since Christmas. They also put a new Coach in place, when Dave Flanagan replaced Brandon Benedict on January 6. They’ve had a tough season but being a spoiler is always a thought.
Saturday night will serve as an opportunity for the Bible Hill Kinsmen – Truro Bearcat Powerplay Partnership to make donations to four selected charities.
This Partnership is now in its twenty-second season. Over the first twenty-one years, $94,800 has been forwarded to charities, all in

Truro came into this week third in the South Division with 55 points, five points up on the Pictou County Crushers who have three games to be played this week.
The one certainty is both clubs will see playoff action.
Bearcat-of-the-Week honours went to rookie goalie, Rylan Benner. He picked up the win in Fredericton, his third victory in five starts since his arrival in January.
