Last week’s schedule for the Truro Bearcats was a busy one but the team came out of it with some real positives.
Foremost was the effort displayed in each of the games. It doesn’t always translate into wins, but it suggests things are moving in the correct direction.
Last Wednesday, the Bearcats fired 45 shots at the Valley Wildcats goalie. Obviously, he was up for the task, turning them all away.
For Valley, it was their second win of the season over the Bearcats. For Truro it was a game that could have gone the other way. That happens.
Saturday Truro hosted the Pictou County Crushers, fresh from a shutout win over the Summerside Capitals.
The confident Crushers came out of the first period up one, but the Bearcats outscored them the rest of the way to record the team’s second win of the season, a 6-4 verdict.
At some point in the second period, the Bearcats moved things up a gear to take over the game, out skating and out playing the opposition. It looked good on them.
Playing with some urgency paid off. Scoring three powerplay goals on four chances was big but not enough to overshadow the team’s determination to win.
Sunday, the sparse afternoon crowd was treated to a full effort by both the Summerside Capitals and Bearcats. It was settled in the thirteenth shoot out round, a 2-1 Capital win.
Play was end-to-end from the get-go and the goaltending was at an MHL best. Comments coming out of the RECC were very positive. The team has made huge steps forward.
The Bearcats enter the week with five points to their credit, based on two wins and the SOL. It takes the team out of the basement and back within striking distance.

The team has a week to prepare for its next two games, a 7:00 pm matchup with Valley at the RECC on Saturday, October 26th, then Sunday in Yarmouth at 4:00 pm. Things are becoming interesting.
Bearcat-of-the-Week went to forward Owen Sparkes, who scored a pair of goals in the opening period against the Crushers, then picked up an assist on the winning tally. Sunday against Summerside he assisted on Truro’s lone regulation time goal. He, and linemates Luke McPhee and Liam Welsh were on fire Saturday picking up three goals and four assists. Originally a 2021 Pictou County draft pick, he played last year with the Amherst Ramblers and was acquired by Truro at the start of this season.
