Bearcat Banter: Playoff Bound

Playing your best hockey with playoffs around the corner is a good thing.

The Bearcats came through a three-game week in flying colours being a winner in each.

Last Wednesday (February 19), the Bearcats were slow out of the gate against the Amherst Ramblers but once they found their legs they matched the Ramblers stride for stride, and more.

The final outcome was determined late in the game but scoring the game’s final two goals gave the Bearcats a well-deserved 6-4 win.

Over their eight regular season matchups, each has won four.  The possibility of a First Round Series is a real one between these two.

The Bearcats picked up their first win of the season over Summerside on Friday (February 21).  It was another dandy.

route to the 6-3 win.

Those wins were a clear message that the Bearcats have their act together and are playing the kind of game they’ve sought.  It’s great to watch.

The Bearcats wrapped up the week in Valley on Saturday (February 20) with a 7-0 win over the Wildcats.

The outcome was determined early.  Truro put up four goals in the opening period then worked hard to allow the rookie goaltender to pick up his first MHL shutout.

There were plenty of positives coming away from these games.  From this corner, much of it had to do with the offensive opportunities created.

Teams like Amherst and Summerside make you earn those chances.  The Bearcats, as a group, are finding ways to make things happen.

Special team play was solid.  Truro picked up powerplay goals in each of the three games while allowing only one against on the penalty kill.

The Bearcats scored in each period over the course of the three games.  While fans expected the top drawer players to get on the score sheet, it’s welcoming to see the secondary scoring.

Clearly things are coming together, and the timing is great.  Truro enters the week in third spot with 53 points, five up on Pictou County.

This week the Bearcats are slated to meet Yarmouth at the RECC on Tuesday (February 25), then travel to Fredericton on Sunday (March 2).  Both are makeup games.

Bearcat-of-the-Week honours went to Philippe Fauchon for leading from the back end.  He contributed two goals and assisted on four others.  He’s playing monster minutes impacting both ends – well done.
