The Truro Bearcats came out of September with three wins and a pair of losses.
Many teams in the MHL would be happy with that start. For the Bearcats, it’s realistic, for a young team in the early going. They have now faced all competition in their Eastlink South Division, with the exception of the South Shore Lumberjacks. They’re getting a feel for where they stand.
Clearly it’s a tough Division but nobody said it was going to be easy. The competition will make all teams better.
Last Wednesday, the Bearcats had a great opening against the Amherst Ramblers but weren’t rewarded. For a variety of reasons, the Ramblers took over.
For the first time this season the Bearcats were playing without the lead. They lost their composure and departed the play expected of them. Youth and lack of experience were obvious. It was a good lesson.
Thursday, in Pictou County, the Bearcats responded differently to playing with a deficit. They replied quickly, upped their intensity, then took charge.
The Bearcats finished the week in Yarmouth against the MHL’s top team at this time. The Mariners scored in each period before the Bearcats could get on the board.
Truro clearly needed more than one goal against that team; however, there were no complaints about compete level, intensity and use of all sixty minutes.
This weekend the Bearcats host their first doubleheader of the season. Friday, the Mariners are in town, and Saturday, Pictou County is at the RECC. Both games get underway at 7:00 pm.
The teams are now familiar with each other. There are no surprises. It’s all about execution.
The MHL Showcase is set for next Monday and Tuesday at the Wellness Centre in New Glasglow.
The Bearcats face the Miramichi Timberwolves, 3:00 pm Monday, then play St. Stephen, 5:00 pm on Tuesday.
