The Truro Bearcats split a pair of home games over the weekend.
Friday, the visiting Yarmouth Mariners may well have felt they were enroute to their first win over the Bearcats in their three meetings to date this season.
In a relatively tame game, Yarmouth was 28 seconds from just that when the Bearcats struck to force OT.
The extra session didn’t solve anything, but the Shootout did. Captain Welsh scored the only goal in the skill competition to claim the 3-2 win.
That was Truro’s third win over the Mariners. Each game has become closer.
Saturday, the Valley Wildcats picked up their second win over the Bearcats. Both teams played a spirited game.
The Wildcats scored a goal a period to earn the 3-1 victory. They were fresh off a win in Pictou County Thursday, obviously feeling they’re moving in the right direction.
In both games, the Bearcats faced some stingy goaltending. In total they fired 79 shots, finding the back of the net but four times.
Truro saw the return of defenceman, Logan Quinn to the lineup. The 2023 Territorial pick played his rookie season with the Bearcats and all of last year with the Cape Breton Eagles. The Bearcats welcome his experience and mobility.
The Eastlink South Standings changed little at the end of Week 7. Summerside remains in top spot with 20 points, followed by Truro (17), Pictou County (15), Amherst and Yarmouth at 14 apiece, while Valley made strides while in the cellar with 10 points.
Hockey Canada has a number of Prospect Games scheduled this Fall right across the county. The East Coast Prospects game is scheduled for November 5, 7:30 in the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
This game features MHL Prospects playing the Quebec Junior Hockey League Prospects. Bearcat Coach, Jon Greenwood, along with Bearcats Nathan Curson, Drew Keiver, Tristan St.-Gelais and Louca Connolly will be part of the MHL Squad.
The event will help identify players for Canada’s World Jr. A Challenge squads scheduled to play in Trois Rivieres in December. Plenty of scouts will have a chance to see these prospects in action.
The Bearcats wrap up October in Campbellton on Halloween Night. Saturday, they travel to Bathurst to face the Chaleur Lightning.
The Bearcats return to the RECC on Thursday, November 13 following five road trips.
