That’s what you call a Maritime road trip — Truro to Edmundston, to Summerside, to Bridgewater, to Amherst, then the return to Truro.
It was a tough week but it has to be considered a rewarding one. When the dust settled, the Bearcats picked up five of the eight points up for grabs, got some players back from the injured list and clinched a playoff spot, the team’s 26th,
in 26 years of operation.
In Edmundston, Truro was down two goals early in the third period, then erupted for four tallies to send the contest into OT. The Blizzard got the goal that mattered in the end, but the Bearcats character was in full display. It was a well-earned point that could very well have been two.
In Summerside, Truro tied things up early in the second but were unable to hold off the Capitals who scored three powerplay goals to claim the 5-3 win. For sure, the Bearcats played the North Division’s top teams straight up. Returning players figured in significantly.
Sunday, in Bridgewater, the Bearcats let a lead slip away before being on the good side of an OT goal. The Lumberjacks have played the Bearcats tough in the last two outings, scoring two powerplay goals in the final period to force the extra session.
The Bearcats wrapped the road trip up with a convincing 5-1 win in Amherst. The teams were tied at one apiece after the first, then it was all Truro the rest of the way, the Bearcats’ sixth win in seven meetings against the Ramblers.
This week the Bearcats prepare for a three game home stand — Yarmouth on Friday, South Shore on Saturday, and the Lumberjacks, again on Tuesday to end the month.
The Mariners lost the first two meetings against Truro but won the last five. This final meeting could be all about messaging. Truro has won four of five against the Lumberjacks, The South Shore squad is out of playoff contention but clearly can play a spoiler role.
Bearcat-of-the-Week honours went to returning forward, Sam Archibald. He fired four goals over the course of the road trip giving his linemates and teammates fresh legs and a desire to contribute. He’s been out of the lineup for close to three weeks —- welcome back.
