The Eastlink South Standings are showing signs of tightening up.
Coming into this week, the Summerside Capitals, with 57 points, are two up on the Bearcats.
Pictou County has closed the gap at 49 points followed closely by Amherst with 47. Yarmouth
and Valley sit in fifth and sixth spot with 35 and 22 points respectively.
Last Thursday in New Glasgow, the Bearcats scored two third period goals but came up short in
the 3-2 loss to the Crushers.
It was an up-tempo game with plenty of chances each way, and few penalties interrupting flow.
Jayden Connors assisted on both Bearcat goals and earned Second Star of the game.
That was the Crushers’ second win in the six outings with the Bearcats. They meet in Truro on
Tuesday, February 10, the makeup date for the postponed January 11 game.
Saturday, in Truro, the visiting Valley Wildcats were on fire early, scoring two on their first three
shots. The Bearcat response was rapid, putting that fire out for the rest of the game.
It was an exciting game with wide open play, solid rushes, good goaltending and some
physicality thrown in. Drew Keiver, with a pair, led the Bearcat attack.
The Bearcats have twelve games left in their Regular Season Schedule. First up this week is a
visit from the Yarmouth Mariners on Friday, January 30th .
The Bearcats have had the upper hand in games with Yarmouth, winning five of six. The
Mariners need wins badly to be part of the post season narrative.
Sunday, the Bearcats are in Berwick to face the Valley Wildcats. All five meetings between the
two have been competitive and spirited. Truro has won three of the five.
Eli Baillargeon, is the team’s leading scorer. His 27 goals and 19 assists have him in the MHL’s
Top Ten in scoring. Jake Todd, Callum Aucoin, Liam Welsh, Nathan Curson, Drew Keiver and
Matthew Boldac are all double-digit goal scorers.
Hats off to rookie goalie, Sam Berthiaume, on his first QMJHL start. Sam made 32 stops for Cape Breton in a 4-3 shootout loss to Charlottetown.
