No excuses

All games starting the first of January clear through to the start of post season play comprise what is commonly referred to as the “next” season.

A lot can happen. Things can change. Divisions are made. Combined, these make for interesting times.

The Truro Bearcats entered this phase in fourth spot in the Eastlink South Division, six points behind Amherst and four up on Pictou County.

December was not kind to the Bearcats. All their games were on the road and they finished with a 1- 4 record for the month.

The Bearcats are better than that and clearly can’t afford another month like that. This makes all games important games.

Come January 10, all MHL rosters are frozen at twenty-three carded players. The Bearcats have one empty card and it should be no secret they’ll be looking for some offensive help.

This is the time of year teams must decide if they stand pat or become either a buyer or seller. For those at the top, and those at the bottom, it’s usually a given.

Not so this year in this Division. A month ago, the Valley Wildcats looked dead in the water; however, they finished the month with wins over the Bearcats, Crushers and a pair of wins over the Lumberjacks. They enter January one point behind the Crushers. Wow.

The first weekend in January is huge for all teams. Results could well be defining which direction a franchise takes.

The Bearcats have three games over the next four days. It begins tonight in Pictou County (7:00 pm).

The Crushers’ pulse has improved. The return of a key rearguard and a win over the Bearcats in the last outing have made them believers again.

Tomorrow (Friday), the Bearcats finally get their dressing room back and preform as a home team. Their opponent, the Edmundston Blizzard, are nationally ranked and first overall in the MHL.

Sunday, the Bearcats will get their first look this year at the Capitals, in Summerside. They’re always tough and sit second in their Division.

The Bearcats know what they have to do -- - win games.
